You wake up and your joints ache. You hear snap, crackle, and pop when you get up and think, “Boy am I getting so old!”

You’re not old, you’re a classic, just like the old cars, motorcycles, and trucks that we used to rebuild and repair.

It’s time for us to get rebuilt

A spot of paint and engine overhaul, a new set of tires: these turn a classic into a masterpiece.

There was a time when I would not even take an aspirin for a headache because I don’t like medicine. As I got older, I had to start taking different pills for my stomach, my blood sugar, my heart, and more. Needless to say, I take pills in the morning and pills in the evening. It’s a daily ritual.

Besides the pills, the first thing I do when I get up is to check my blood sugar and my blood pressure. But, this doesn’t get me down: I look at myself as an antique or classic car that has gotten run down some. Now, it’s time to fix it up.

I remember seeing a 1950 Mercury sitting in a junk yard one time

I walked over to it and looked it over the motor and transmission was gone, but the body was complete and in great shape. It had no rust and the interior just needed a little cleaning. As I was checking on the car to buy and rebuild it, someone else purchased it.

This was my ideal car to do a rebuild: big and bulky but with “style.” My plan was to take my time and rebuild this car with my son and then after we got it fixed up was to give it to him for a gift. But since the car was sold before I could get it, this wasn’t going to happen.

It’s hard to say why our bodies break down. Sometimes we’re born with it, other times life takes a toll. In my case, I pushed off health concerns so I could support my family. I worked through the pain, but once day, it caught up with me. But like I said, I’m a classic I just needing to be overhauled.

Restoration

“Job 42:10 And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.”

So what do we tell those that in need of restoration? Be an encouragement. It takes a Master Mechanic to restore something that is broke down. The best one for the job is Jesus. Let them know that by His stripes we are healed

“Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

Never stop

A question people ask from time to time is “when do you just sit back and relax?” Many of the people I knew never stopped working for God, even until their death. There is still work to do! After all, who will teach the “new models” the ways of the road?

“Titus 2:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,”

I remember the examples others set for me as I got started with my walk for the Lord. In my mind, I still see myself as the shiny new car that has still got a lot of miles left in me. In reality, I’m that old car that has been rebuilt — but I still have a lot of miles left in me!

Don’t sell yourself short because of your age. In a way I laugh at myself: as I am writing this blog, I’m sitting here at my desk with a battery charger charging up the battery for my spinal cord stimulator that has been implanted in me.

So every so often I need a battery charge too. Don’t let your battery go dead: keep a charge in it so you’re prepared to do the the work God has for you.

May God bless you and keep you in top running condition!
