How many of you remember the Andy Griffith show and the episode where the man from the big city who’s car broke down in Mayberry? Goober could not get the part to fix his car and he was stuck in Mayberry for the weekend? he was so upset because he had so much to do.
Any way as the show goes on there is Andy Barney and the City Man sitting on the front porch Andy and Barney are talking and the man from the city finally slows do and is asleep on the porch with a half peeled apple in his hand on that lazy Sunday afternoon.
Do you remember a time like that in your life? I feel sorry for this modern generation because they might never know what it is to a time when you had to slow down and relax on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Years ago when I was a boy I remember mom and dad had to buy gas on Saturday if they wanted to go anywhere on Sunday. If you needed to get groceries you had to wait till after 12:00 if the store would open then and a lot of the store would open then.
But things were a lot different back then.
Ball games were scheduled after church and if you found a restaurant open then you might go out to eat. If you were fortunate to have a transistor radio the only stations you could get had Cristian music on it. I remember we would look all week for the weekend to get there and then on Sunday it was a day of rest.
We might meet at a lot close by to play ball or something. Those times were slower not as fast paced as it is today. This is a McDonalds pace world we want it yesterday and we want it super sized. I wished todays generation could feel what it was like to come to a complete stop — to sit on a porch on a lazy Sunday. They don’t know what they are missing.
Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
I look at todays times that we live in and so many people are running at such a fast pace. I have to wonder if we would take one day and stop from our daily grind how much it might change the pressure and attitude that so many people seem to have on them.
This past summer we would go camping and I would sit outside the camper and play my guitar. Some times people would stop by and sit down to listen to the music and visit. Im not saying that because I was my playing people would find peace but if one person was able to slow down a little and find some peace and quiet then that good.
My thought is that if the world has added so much pressure since I was a kid on people I don’t know what it is going to be like in another 20, 30, or 40 years. Take time to slow down and enjoy your family and life.
May God give you rest and peace.
